The Two Valley Trail Teacher Notes

The Teacher Notes include Points of Interest. These are like ‘teacher talk’ and provide background information and suggestions on how to introduce the features that you’ll see during your walk. They are only suggestions and not meant to be prescriptive. Wherever possible, the suggestions attempt to relate what the students are seeing to their own experiences.

The Checklists of Living Things and Natural and Built Features can be used to initially focus the students’ attention on what they will see during their walk. There is no intention that teachers have to mark these.

And you may well find that students are best left to observe and interact with their environment during their walk – through drawing particular features, doing leaf and bark rubbings, using hand-held mirrors to investigate tree canopies, using bug boxes or magnifying glasses – and completing Activity Sheets as follow-up back at school.

The references to colour swatches refer to the colour sample cards available from hardware and paint stores. Students can match these to the colours of the bush and use them for art work back at school.
