On a lovely clear April morning a group of strangers gathered at Unwin St in Tempe to walk the 5km length of the Wolli Creek Regional Park. Introducing ourselves, we started to discover shared interests and connections. Some of us had been here before, for others it was a new adventure. Ute, our experienced leader, showed us the route on a map, and began to share her knowledge of the remarkable social history and environmental significance of this special place.
Starting from Wolli Bluff and the SWOOS – so many stories – passing Wave Rock – admiring the dainty cottages at Jackson Place – onto Turrella Reserve – site of the former market gardens, revegetation “islands” and the fish ladder – pushing on up to Nannygoat Hill to re-enact that first environment protest – on to the flying fox camp – meeting Laura and Pat, a couple of WCPS heroes – via the enigmatic Russell’s Pool to Girahween – that jewel of bush regeneration – then across the road to Bray Ave where we encountered an active bushcare group. Inspiring!
We met and talked to several groups of walkers and distributed bookmarks to anyone who seemed interested. Admired the habitat stepping stones, the revegetation plantings and wondered at the diversity of habitats of the valley. Checked out the bioretention basin. Departed with new connections and greater understandings. Hope to see you all again soon in the valley!
That was the last guided walk for autumn, but we will be leading walks again in Spring.
