Guest speaker at the Wolli Creek Preservation Society annual dinner on Friday 17 October will be bird expert and scientist Richard Major from the Australian Museum, who will talk about the charismatic and vulnerable white-fronted chat, a bird of saltmarsh areas, which used to be reported in the Wolli Valley in the 1940s. It is not having an easy time in urban areas, where most saltmarsh has been shrunk, degraded or destroyed.
Richard has been monitoring white-fronted chats in the Towra Point area on Botany Bay, the last breeding colony in Sydney, and at Sydney Olympic Park where the group is down to two males. Recently he visited areas of remnant and reconstructed saltmarsh in the Wolli Creek and Cooks River areas. He is also involved in Birds in Backyards and the cockatoo wing-tag project.
We will also have the usual mega-size, multi-prize raffle: lots of great prizes, lots of winners!
So do come along to the annual dinner on Friday 17 October: St George Rowing Club, 1 Levey St, Wolli Creek (bar open from 6.00 pm), cost $45/person.
Join us on one of our popular kayak trips – Wolli from Creek to Crest.
We have two of our very popular kayak trips coming up on Saturday October 11 and Saturday November 8. These are run in partnership with the NSW River Canoe Club whose club house is at Tempe.
Cost is $40 per trip (includes a light lunch, hire of kayaks or canoes, and commentary).
The whole event, which takes about 4 hours all up, includes an intro to kayaking for beginners, a tour of Turrella Reserve and its various environmental developments and issues, a look at the Grey-headed Flying-fox camp, a walk up Nannygoat Hill for a great view, plus light food. The trip gives you a quite different and surprising view of Wolli Creek. Starting time will be around 8 or 9 am depending on date chosen.
