UNVEILING JACKSON PLACE HISTORY

Last March, committee member Julia Frecheville, who lives in Jackson Place, happened to meet Susan Jackson James, who was visiting Jackson Place for the first time. Julia discovered that Susan is a great granddaughter of the quarry-owner William Jackson, who built the sandstone cottages in this hidden lane.

Long-time resident Judy Finlason had researched the history of Jackson and the cottages and published the book, “The Place That Jackson Built”, available to buy on our website https://wollicreek.org.au/shop-2/#publications. For many years, she had put out information sheets on the lane, for passing walkers to read about the history of the cottages.

With input from the Jackson family, Julia organised a more permanent plaque to be made and installed. Residents of the street and WCPS members turned out for the unveiling. Jackson family members in Queensland watched on WhatsApp as Kitty’s son Jim filmed the event. After Julia’s speech, the plaque was unveiled by street local Hallie, plus Julia’s grandchildren Artie and Otis.
